It also seems to work with copyrighted and protected videos.

I've used this to convert a number of old home movies so far.

That's it! The tape played through, and the software / hardware converted and recorded it on the fly in digital format. All I had to specify was the recording length and the burning speed / DVD title (when converting and burning straight to DVD - it's also possible to save the conversion on the computer as a media file). The software walked me through the steps with its "wizard" mode, which is a quick, no-frills way to simply convert a tape without adding any extra frills like DVD menus and title cards (though that's possible in the "advanced" mode).

The included software installed smoothly on Windows 10, and from there, all I had to do was plug in the VCR to the conversion box via composite cables (yellow / red / white) and then plug the conversion box into the computer via USB. This little box worked perfectly with our old VCR. How did we watch those tapes back in the old days anyway? LOL. Don't think you will get anything better than the source material in terms of resolution or color rendering, you will just end up with a clean copy of low grade taped AV. Using the "better" video cable and USB 3 port resolved all those issues and resulted in a decent copy. Using the USB 2 and the poorer video cable resulted in artifacts in the digital copy that weren't in the source video, degraded sound (low frequencies were reduced) and video freezes and chop in the digital copy. I tried two different video cables and found one of them produced better results than the other, so I will assume one video cable was better than the other, but I know of no test I can run that would prove that. I did find that I needed to use a USB 3 port on the computer for the best results, but that might just be my hardware (ASUS M32 series, 4 GB, Win10). Kind of a clunky software interface, but if you are not in a hurry to start and take your time fiddling around with the various options, you will eventually figure out the best way to get the quality you find acceptable. Their support seemed to be customer focused.

If you are having difficulties with the program check out their website for anything you might need to download and contact their support if you need help. Since some of my tapes are quite boring and lengthy pictures from previous Christmas' I will be using the feature that allows me to edit the length of the video and remove scenes that I want to remove. The VHS tapes were a result of a very old style video camera so not of great quality so the quality of the digital file is as good as the tape. It was quite easy to use and it appears to produce a decent digital file. I will convert one of the digital files to a DVD as a gift. I've saved several family videos from VHS to digital. Once those kinks were taken care of the program performed well.

I had to download the drivers as they weren't recognized when i installed them off the DVD and I had to download a patch, I also had to ultimately contact Honestech support by email and they gave me an immediate response which finally got the program working properly. After some difficulties installing the product it finally worked well.
